GENE AT 4P16.3: Sun Protection

Your yu-nique body has varying degrees of natural UVA and UVB protection. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, or blue light, a photochemical process occurs, breaking down UV rays before they cause harm.

Evidence1 shows that incorporating broad-spectrum sunscreen every day can even help slow down the skin’s aging process up to 24%!

Meet your body’s melanin, a natural skin pigment that may help protect the body from harmful UV rays. Hello Louise,

My name is Darcy. I am the resident biochemist for Yudoyu, and I created your optimized skincare routine. You have GREAT skin, but your DNA tells me that you are on the sensitive side and might be at risk for collagen loss. With regular and consistent use you will see steady improvement in the quality of your skin. Please take care to add lifestyle and supplement changes (outlined below) for an added boost toward happier healthier skin! Remember to use an SPF, because even skin with IDEAL sun protection like yours can be damaged by too much UV exposure.

Warmly,
Darcy and The Yudoyu Team

Now, let’s look at some of our favorite ways to show our DNA who’s boss!

Genetics vs. Epigenetics

So you just got your results, and maybe some areas scored higher, or lower, than you may have expected.

And that’s ok. Why? Get ready for some news that’s sure to turn those frown lines upside down! Meet your new best friend… EPIGENETICS.

Epigenetics is the study of how our lifestyle and environment can cause changes that affect the way our genes work. Long story short, this area of study continues to prove that there’s hope – that there is a lot we can do to change the hands we’ve been dealt, some of which cost hardly anything to put into practice by the way. Pretty cool, huh?

POSSIBLE TRIGGERS

We understand the following advice might feel burdensome, or complicated at first, however, we promise your skin will thank you for the extra time spent avoiding its triggers.

  • Sudden changes in weather, climate, or temperature – We know, we can’t control the weather. Our best recommendation is to protect your skin from extremely hot, or cold, exposure.
  • Long ingredients lists – Try to avoid products with more than 15 ingredients.
  • Fragrance – When you see fragrance as an ingredient take caution by performing a a patch test on your neck, preferably that’s least visible, to test if you have a reaction. Your skin knows you better than we ever will, so listen to your body and let your skin decide what’s right for you!
  • Essential Oils – Although helpful to many, natural doesn’t always mean suitable for every skin type. Again, we recommend patch testing somewhere small on your neck before implementing completely into your routine.
  • Baking Soda – Notorious for its affordable price, accessibility, and prominent role in DIY deodorant recipes, this efficient household cleaning agent has no business being in your skincare products and should be avoided at all costs. Not only is it physically abrasive, but its ph level combined with the ph level of your skin is a recipe for disaster!
  • Dermatologist Tested & Approved – Though this claim isn’t a must-have, or guarantee, it definitely scores major points for Sensitives! We won’t argue against moving any products with this seal of approval to the front of the line.
  • “Coco Betaine” (aka skin’s arch-nemesis) – Meet one of the harshest sulfates no one is talking about. It’s not only a known carcinogen but a known trigger for sensitive skin types and common skin ailments like eczema. It goes by many names and is unfortunately still used in several products. We advise checking all soaps, shampoos, and bath products for the following names before purchasing (you might want to go through your at-home supply NOW!):
    1. Cocamidopropyl Betaine
    2. 1-Propanaminium, N-(carboxymethyl)-N,N-dimethyl-3-((1-oxococonut) amino)-, hydroxide, inner salt
    3. N-(2-Aminoethyl)-N-(2-(2-carboxyethoxy)ethyl) beta-alanine, norcoco acyl derivs., disodium salts
    4. N-(Carboxymethyl)-N,N-dimethyl-3-((1-oxococonut)amino)-1-propanaminium hydroxide, inner salt
    5. Cocamidopropyl dimethyl glycine
    6. Cocoamphocarboxypropionate
    7. Quaternary ammonium compounds, (carboxymethyl)(3cocoamidopropyl) dimethyl, hydroxides, inner salts
    8. Beta-Alanine, N-(2-aminoethyl)-N-(2-(2-carboxyethoxy)ethyl)-, norcoco acyl derivs., disodium salts
    9. Cocoamphodiproprionate
    10. Cocoyl amide propylbetaine
    11. Disodium cocoamphodipropionate Mirataine CB.

BUYERS BEWARE

Would you put paint thinner on your face? Yeah, we thought not. We recommend opting for safe and natural brightening agents. Avoid the use of the following ingredients and their nasty side effects.

*Avoid products with terms like “whitening” and “lightening” and look for terms like “all-natural” and “brightening.” Though many of these harmful products are banned in many countries, they are still surprisingly accessible.

Hydroquinone – A carcinogenic, toxic skin lightener. Not only can it cause organ damage, but a whole host of other dangerous health consequences.

Harsh Retinoids – Many can lead to peeling, irritation, excessive dryness, and unnecessary sun sensitivity.

DO IT YOURSELF: Facial Massage

Lymphatic Facial Massage MapLymphatic Drainage Techniques

Manual lymphatic drainage with fingers: Lymphatic drainage is a type of facial massage designed to boost the body’s own natural draining system. By assisting in the movement of excess toxins, water, fats, and proteins down the lymph vessels and into the nodes, the face is left visibly more lifted, firm, and youthful!

Step 1: Apply treatment oil, or cleansing balm, of choice. Fingers should not drag but glide easily over the skin with little to no resistance.

Step 2: Follow the directional guide below. Using light pressure, gently massage the face in an upwards and outwards motion. Pressure should be not unlike moving a pen across a table. The key is to lift and relax muscles! If redness occurs, lighten the pressure.

Step 3: Finish with a glass of water, herbal tea, or warm broth, for added hydration.

What if I’m doing this wrong?

Though a skilled facialist’s techniques are hard to beat, there is comfort in knowing two things:

1. Practice makes perfect! If you have fingers, knuckles, or palm(s), and a face to practice on, you too can be a pro in doing your own facial massages in no time.

2. There are few wrong answers. If you are working in upwards and outwards motions with light, relaxing, amounts of pressure, you are certain to be fighting against one of the main causes of wrinkles – gravity.

NOURISH & GLOW: Protect From The Inside Out

Protection From the Inside Out: Forgot your sunscreen today? That’s ok, because Salmon has your back (quite literally). Studies show that sun protection can be increased with something as simple as a daily fish oil supplement2

Mind Your Omegas: Meet Omega-3 and Omega-6.

Think of Omega-3 as the introvert at the party that has trouble speaking up, but when he does, he lights up the whole room.

Now picture Omega-6 as your extreme extrovert friend who has absolutely no trouble socializing the moment she gets in the door. Just a little bit of her extreme personality goes a long way—maybe too far with some of the other guests at the party.

This is how these essential fatty acids are introduced into your system, and most of the time we get way too much Omega-6, but not enough Omega-3. Ideally, we want an omega-3:omega-6 ratio of 1:4 – that is, if you want to keep all the organs in your party..err body, happy. Maintaining this ideal ratio has several other health benefits we won’t get into today, but since we’re on the subject, the key organ this golden ratio protects is your largest one—your skin!

This can be achieved via supplementation, simple dietary inclusions, and simple dietary avoidances.
